Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do you still provide EnerGuide ratings, rebate programs, or certifications such as ENERGY STAR, Net Zero, R-2000, LEED, or Passive House?

Not directly.

For full-service energy programs, certifications, and large-scale consulting support, I recommend reaching out to trusted colleagues and former partners including:

These organizations have excellent teams doing important work across Canada.

Do you still do construction or renovation work?

Not in the way I once did.

After more than four decades in construction and building science, my work today is focused more on guidance, mentorship, training, troubleshooting, and selective project involvement.

That said, builders never completely stop building. I still spend plenty of time on my own projects, and I remain interested in innovative, meaningful, and genuinely sustainable housing initiatives. (This summer I will be building a small cabin with my 11 year old granddaughter).

Why is your work focused on Indigenous housing and northern communities?

Because the need is real, and the work matters.

Over the past several years I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside First Nations and Inuit communities across Northern Ontario, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Labrador. Those experiences reinforced something I’ve believed for a long time: healthy, durable housing has a profound impact on quality of life, community wellbeing, and long-term resilience.

I’m particularly interested in practical, community-based approaches that combine building science, local knowledge, mentorship, and long-term thinking.

At this stage of my life, this is where I feel my experience can be most useful.

Do you work in cities?

Occasionally, but most of my current work is connected to rural, remote, northern, and Indigenous housing initiatives.

Cold-climate and remote-community housing challenges are where my interests and experience align most closely.

How far will you travel?

Anywhere in Canada for the right project — especially in northern and remote communities.

I’m still not afraid of small planes.

What are your qualifications?

I’ve worked in construction, energy efficiency, and sustainable housing for over 45 years as a carpenter, homebuilder, energy advisor, trainer, consultant, and business owner.

Professional qualifications include:

  • Certified Energy Advisor (CEA)
  • Certified Passive House Consultant (PHIUS & PHI)
  • LEED AP (BD+C)
  • Journeyman Carpenter
  • Residential Air Systems Design Technician (RASDT)

Additional background includes advanced studies in Green Building Science and decades of practical field experience in cold-climate housing.

Are you retired?

Sort of.

After selling Homesol Building Solutions in 2018, Kathryn and I intended to retire completely. That lasted about two years before I was drawn back into selective work connected to Indigenous housing, mentorship, training, and healthy cold-climate homes.

These days I’m much more selective about the projects I take on, with a strong preference for meaningful work, good people, and maintaining a healthy balance between work and the semi-retired life.

Did you make up your own FAQ questions?

Of course.

But they’re still good questions.
